Decoy SV-61 Salt Special Jig Head — Made In Japan
The SV-61 Salt Special is the medium-weight head in Decoy's saltwater jig head range, built for the gap where light-game heads run out of authority but a full heavy head is more than the job needs. Katsuichi describe it as a head designed for situations where lightweight models are insufficient, best matched to 4–6 inch grubs and hog-type soft baits. It was developed around the large soi and ainame of the Tohoku rock coast, and doubles as a general head for seabass and other lure targets. The store carries three of the four factory sizes: #1 at 5 g, #1/0 at 7 g and #2/0 at 9 g, W Nickel finish, five per pack.
A saltwater head is not a freshwater head with a different label. The plating is corrosion-oriented W Nickel rather than a bright bass finish, the hook is heavier in the wire so it will not open under drag from a fish that dives into rock, and the shank keeper is built to lock a soft plastic through repeated casts into current.
Key Features
- Medium-weight saltwater head bridging light game and heavy bottom work
- Designed around 4–6 inch grubs and hog-type soft baits
- W Nickel finish specified for saltwater service
- Hook sizes #1, #1/0 and #2/0 paired to 5 g, 7 g and 9 g heads
- Five heads per pack
- Shank keeper to hold soft plastics in place
- Companion to the SV-62 Salt Special Heavy, which takes over from #3/0 up
How To Rig It
- SV-61 or SV-62 — Fish the SV-61 in the shallow-to-mid band: drains, jetty lights and rock edges to roughly 5 m in mild current, with 3–5 inch plastics. Switch to the SV-62 when depth, tide or fish size means 9 g will not hold bottom.
- Weight by depth and flow — 5 g for shallow flats and slack water and a long glide; 7 g as the everyday choice in moderate current; 9 g when wind or tide pushes the lure off the contact you want.
- Rigging the plastic — Enter the nose square, thread the body straight down the shank so it sits without a bend, then push it hard onto the keeper. A twisted bait spins and kills the tail action.
- Bottom hopping — Lift with the rod tip and let the head fall on a semi-slack line. Rockfish and grouper take on the drop, so watch where the line enters the water.
- Straight swim — Count it down, then wind slowly so the grub tail works just above structure; speed up through the tide line and let it fall again.
Target Species By Region
- Southeast Asia — Barramundi (siakap) at jetty lights and mangrove drains, mangrove jack, estuary grouper (kerapu) on rock walls, queenfish off breakwaters.
- North America — Redfish, speckled trout and flounder inshore; striped bass around bridge pilings; rockfish, lingcod and cabezon in Pacific kelp.
- Japan & East Asia — The home use: large soi and ainame on the Tohoku rock coast, plus kasago, suzuki and hirame on light salt tackle.
- Australia, Middle East & Europe — Flathead and bream in Australian estuaries; hamour and queenfish over Gulf structure; bass, pollack and wrasse on European rock marks.
