Decoy KR-23 Flash Hook — Made In Japan
The KR-23 Flash Hook belongs to Decoy's KR series, the light game singles built for finesse work with small lures and natural bait rather than for heavy jigging. What sets this one apart is the dressing: shimmering fibres tied at the eye so the hook carries its own visual signal. On a plain bait hook the metal is something to hide; here it is part of the presentation, giving the bait a flickering, baitfish-like edge in the moments when a fish is deciding. That matters most in two situations — clear, bright water where a fish has time to inspect what it is looking at, and low-activity conditions where a static bait alone is not enough to draw a committed take. Six sizes, #1 through #6, in a low-visibility black nickel finish.
Within the KR range this is the attractor version. The KR-21 Live Bait Light is the plain fine-wire hook for live prawns and baitfish, the KR-24 Light Special is the slim finesse specialist, and the KR-25 Sandworm and KR-26 Mini Worm cover worm and micro-bait presentations. Reach for the KR-23 when those are getting looks but not takes.
Key Features
- Single bait hook with flash fibres attached at the eye
- Fibres mimic a small baitfish and add visual appeal to a static or slow-moving bait
- Built to convert short and subtle bites into solid hook-ups
- Designed for light game and finesse fishing
- Suited to ajing, mebaring and micro-bait rigs
- Black nickel finish to keep the hook itself discreet
- Six sizes, #1 to #6 — in Japanese numbering, #6 is the smallest
How To Rig It
- Bait it lightly — Hook a small strip, a piece of worm or isome, or a live shrimp through one end only, leaving the point and the fibres clear. Loading the hook with bait smothers the flash and defeats the reason for using it.
- Split shot and drop shot — On light tackle, run the hook a metre or so below a small split shot, or tie it above a drop shot weight. Lift and settle it in short movements so the fibres pulse; the take usually comes as it stops.
- Under a float at night — Around lit harbours and jetties, suspend it just under the light line and let the current work it. The fibres flicker in the light where a bare hook shows nothing.
- Sabiki-style droppers — As the dropper on a light multi-hook rig it does the job of a commercial sabiki's tinsel, but on a properly sized hook.
- Setting the hook — Light game bites are soft. Lean into the fish and let the rod load rather than swinging; a fine hook needs little force to bury.
Target Species By Region
- Southeast Asia — Selar, kembung (Indian mackerel) and small snapper (ikan merah) off jetties, small grouper (kerapu) on breakwaters, whiting over sand.
- North America — Perch, crappie and panfish on light freshwater rigs; croaker, whiting, porgy and speckled trout on inshore bait rigs.
- Japan & East Asia — The home use: aji on ajing rigs, mebaru on mebaring, plus haze and small kisu on light bait tackle.
- Australia, Middle East & Europe — Whiting, bream and yellowtail scad off Australian jetties; small emperor and rabbitfish in the Gulf; mackerel, garfish, scad and small pollack on European piers.
