Decoy JS-2 Jigging Single Cutlass Hook — Made In Japan

Take the name literally and you will buy the wrong hook. A cutlass is a short curved sword, and that is what the JS-2 is named after — not the cutlassfish. Katsuichi name several jigging hooks from the same armoury: the AS-06 is the Falx, the AS-07 the Sabelx, both curved blades. Their own page for the JS-2 names no target species at all, only a wide range of game fish from bottom to mid-water, and the hook actually built for tachiuo, the Japanese cutlassfish, is a different product entirely — the DJ-89 Tachi Pike, on stainless wire.

It is a ringed hook made specifically for assist use, sold loose so you can build assists on deck to match whatever jig is producing. What sets it apart from other singles is that the specification changes with size, to suit the rod you are holding. Sizes #1 to #6/0 use M2J wire with a DTM point treatment, the high-elasticity pairing matched to high-elasticity rods, which keeps hooking response fast. Sizes #7/0, #8/0 and #10/0 switch to M1J wire with a bullet-shaped Shell Point, the low-elasticity pairing for softer, slower rods where raw penetration matters more than speed.

How To Rig It

• Tie your own assist — Hollow braid or Kevlar cord through the eye, a solid ring at the top, shrink tube over the knot. Set the length so the hook reaches roughly the widest part of the jig body.
• Match the size to your rod, not only your jig — A high-elasticity blank loads and releases fast, which suits the #5/0 and #6/0 M2J and DTM combination. Softer, slower rods used for deep and heavy work suit the #7/0 upward Shell Point sizes.
• Single front assist — One hook at the nose is the standard offshore setting: it tangles less on a fast drop and comes free of rope and reef more readily than a twin.
• Twin for short biters — Two hooks on tethers of unequal length convert fish that swipe at the jig instead of eating it. Keep it for clean bottom.
