The JS-1 Sergeant'N' is a loose single hook made specifically for jigging assist rigs — not a finished rig but the hook itself, for anglers who build their own assists or re-hook existing rigs. Katsuichi's aim was a shape with nothing wasted on it: one that sets easily and then holds regardless of where in the fish it ends up. The eye is back-shifted and wide, so the assist cord pulls from behind the shank and rotates the point in rather than dragging it out sideways, and the point carries a gentle twist that finds a hold instead of skating across bone. Behind them sit massive wire and a round wide gape, which is what turns a good set into a landed fish over a long fight.

Katsuichi's own bench figures explain where this hook belongs: #3/0 comfortably past 70 kg, #6/0 past 100 kg, #8/0 past 150 kg. That covers pelagic jigging for amberjack and yellowtail at the small end, and escolar, oversized amberjack and tuna at the large end. Tin plating with Aqua Block treatment.

How To Rig It

• Tie your own assist — Hollow braid or Kevlar cord through the eye, a solid ring at the top, shrink tube over the knot. Keep the tether short enough that the hook sits at the jig's widest point.
• Single front assist — One hook at the nose is the standard offshore setting; it tangles less on a fast drop and pulls free of rope and rock more readily.
• Twin for short biters — Two JS-1 hooks on separate tethers convert fish that swipe rather than eat, at the cost of tangles. Use it over clean bottom.
• Match size to the jig, not the fish — An oversized single swings out on the drop and fouls the leader; undersized, it cannot reach past the jaw.

• Southeast Asia — Amberjack, giant trevally (gerepoh), dogtooth tuna and large grouper (kerapu) over deep reef and wrecks.
• North America — Amberjack, yellowtail, grouper and lingcod on vertical jigs; tuna on the larger sizes.
