Decoy DJ-81 Powerful Assist Hook — Made In Japan

The DJ-81 Powerful Assist is Decoy's single-type assist rig, built as the strength-and-durability option in the jigging assist range and intended primarily as a front hook. The hook is designed solely for assist work and optimised for PE line. The root line is a red compound braid with a smooth resin coating against abrasion where the cord bears on the ring, and the knot is reinforced with a red protective tube — the two places an assist rig normally fails. Gold with Aqua Block coating, in #M, #L and #LL, four per pack.

The DJ-81 and the DJ-82 Twin Assist are built from the same components, so the choice between them is not about hook quality — it is one hook or two. The DJ-81 is the single: one point, one tether, far less to tangle around the leader on a fast drop and far less metal to find rock, rope or net. The DJ-82 puts two independent hooks on their own adjustable tethers, converting more of the half-hearted swipes a single misses, at the cost of tangles and snags. Fish the DJ-81 over foul ground and on fast vertical drops; keep a twin for clean bottom and short-biting fish.

How To Rig It

• Front mount as standard — Hang it at the head of the jig for vertical and speed jigging, where fish take a rising jig from below and in front. That is what it is designed for.
• Assist length — Set the finished length to roughly one third to one half of the jig body, ring to hook bend. Too short and it cannot reach a fish hitting the rear; too long and it wraps the leader on the drop.
• Single over foul ground — On rocky pinnacles, wrecks and rope-strewn marks, one hook is the practical choice. You will lose fewer jigs and spend less time clearing tangles.
• Attachment — Hang it on a solid ring, then join that to the jig with a heavy split ring so the cord never bears on a split ring seam.

• Southeast Asia — Jigging reef and wreck for gerepoh (giant trevally), queenfish, tenggiri (Spanish mackerel), red snapper (ikan merah) and grouper (kerapu).
• North America — Amberjack, grouper and snapper on Gulf and Atlantic wrecks; yellowtail, lingcod and rockfish on Pacific trips.
• Japan & East Asia — Buri and hiramasa on vertical and speed jigging, and kanpachi where a single front assist keeps a fast jig clean through the rise.
