Water pressure alone makes it beat like the pectoral fin of a small baitfish, so the jig keeps sending out a fine wave signal through the whole fall, not only during the jerk. DUEL also engineered the body to cut through water more easily: their simulation showed an 8% reduction in jerking resistance against comparable models and their measured figure was 10%, which they calculate as roughly 160 kg of load taken off the angler's arm over a full day of shakuri. This A1702 is the #3.0 at 14.5 g — a full size up from the #2.5 A1701, and the size most shore anglers settle on once autumn squid have grown and the wind gets up.

How To Fish It

• Pick the size before the colour — The #2.5 A1701 at 10 g is the shallow, calm, early-season tool. This #3.0 at 14.5 g casts further into a headwind, holds its line in tide, gets down over deeper weed and rock, and shows a bigger profile to squid that have put on weight. Carry both and switch on depth and wind, not on confidence.
• Whipping (shakuri) cadence — Tip low, two to four sharp upward snaps so the jig darts and the fin flutters, then stop dead. Squid take on the fall that follows. The lower jerking resistance of this body means you can keep that rhythm going far longer before your arm gives up.
• Long pause on the drop — Because the fin keeps working with no input from you, the dead stop is not dead. Let this jig hang two or three seconds longer than you think you should; hesitant squid commit during that extra pause.
• Manage the slack — Drop the rod tip after each jerk series and keep only a gentle bow in the line. If the line stops falling, jumps or drifts sideways, sweep into it in one long pull rather than striking.
• Boat drifting — Drop to the bottom, lift twice, then hold still and let the jig swing back on the drift. The extra 4.5 g over the #2.5 keeps it under the boat instead of skating away in current.
