The Aurie-Q is the jig DUEL/Yo-Zuri launched in 1995 and the model many Japanese anglers still treat as the reference point for what an egi should do. This is the cloth-wrapped (nunomaki) version: instead of a printed or foil shell, the body is covered in fabric. Cloth diffuses light into a soft matte glow rather than a hard flash, and it feels like something alive when a squid wraps its arms around it, so the squid holds a fraction longer — often the difference between a clean hook-up and two sucker marks on a returned jig. The rest is the original Aurie-Q package: a rolling swivel line eye against line twist, a glow eye, a keeled sinker shaped to skate over rock, and the trick hook crown.

How To Fish It

• Count the fall, then repeat it — At roughly 3.1 seconds per metre, a count of ten puts the jig about three metres down and thirty puts it near ten metres. Add ten each cast until it ticks bottom or a squid takes, then fish that exact count every cast.
• Shakuri cadence — Rod tip low, snap upward two to four times so the jig darts, then stop and let it glide back on a controlled slack line. The dart is the call; the fall is where the bite happens, so never cut the pause short.
• Work it slow over structure — A cloth body is at its best fished patiently. Let the jig settle on weed tops or a rock shelf, give one lazy lift, and let it hang. Squid that refused a fast-worked jig will often move on a stationary cloth one.
• Read the line, not the rod — Bites show as the line stopping early, jumping or drifting sideways. Sweep into it in one long pull rather than striking, because squid tentacles tear.

• Southeast Asia — Bigfin reef squid (sotong torak) and cuttlefish (sotong katak) on candat sotong trips off Terengganu, Johor and the Indonesian islands, worked under boat lights after dark, plus jetty and breakwater squid.
• North America — Market squid around lit piers and harbour walls on the California coast, fished down the pilings and along the light line at night.
• Japan & East Asia — Aoriika from rocky shores and harbours is the classic eging target, with kensaki-ika taken from drifting boats; the same jigs are used in Korea and Taiwan.
• Australia, Middle East & Europe — Southern calamari and cuttlefish over seagrass in South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania; European squid and cuttlefish on Mediterranean and Atlantic eging marks.
