GAMAKATSU - SINGLE HOOK 53 SALT MADE IN JAPAN
Gamakatsu Single Hook 53 Salt (Made In Japan)
The Single Hook 53 Salt is the saltwater build of Gamakatsu's plug-specific Single Hook 53, made for replacing the trebles on minnows, jerkbaits, sinking pencils and topwater plugs. Its curved point and wide-gap profile are shaped to make contact and begin penetrating even when a fish strikes lightly or turns away after touching the lure — the moment where a treble often only pricks and drops out. Hyper Shield plating, the Magic Eye system and an enlarged ring eye suit repeated saltwater use: the eye feeds onto a split ring quickly, and the large ring lets the hook swing instead of binding against the lure body.
Key Features
- Saltwater plugging design — a treble replacement for hard lures and casting plugs
- Hyper Shield corrosion-resistant finish
- Magic Eye system: the eye shape makes the hook easier to feed into a split ring
- Large ring eye for clearance and free movement on the split ring
- Curved point that starts penetrating under the light tension of a glancing strike
- Wide-gap profile for point exposure
- Micro barb — easier penetration, dependable holding
- Listed by Gamakatsu for shore and offshore jigging and casting
How To Rig It
- Why swap trebles for singles — A single fouls bottom and structure far less than three points, does less damage to a fish you intend to release, and cannot tangle its own leader or the lure's other hook. Under load the pull sits on one point in line with the shank, so there is no lever prying the bend open. The trade-off is real: fewer points means a lower hook-up rate on short strikes, and the strike must be more deliberate — let the rod load and the fish turn before you sweep.
- Rear position first — If you convert only one hanger, convert the tail; most saltwater plug strikes land at the back of the lure. Mount the point facing up so it rides clear of the body on the retrieve.
- Match the ring, not just the hook — A single puts all load into one split ring, so use a ring rated to your leader class or it becomes the failure point.
- Check the swim after the swap — A single is lighter than the treble it replaced. Watch the plug boatside; if it rolls or rides high, go up a size.
Target Species By Region
- Southeast Asia — Barramundi (siakap), queenfish (talang), Spanish mackerel (tenggiri), small giant trevally (gerepoh) and barracuda on plugs around jetties, rock walls and reef edges.
- North America — Striped bass, bluefish and false albacore on surf and boat plugs; inshore redfish and snook on the flats, where singles are often preferred.
- Japan & East Asia — Shore plugging and shore jigging for seabass (suzuki), buri, sawara and hiramasa; also used on flat-side plugs for hirame and rockfish.
- Australia, Middle East & Europe — Barramundi, kingfish and tailor in Australia; queenfish and king mackerel on Gulf coasts; sea bass and pollack on European shore plugs.
