Santec Knight Feathers — Lure Dressing And Fly Tying Material

Feathers do one thing no synthetic fibre and no plastic tail can match: they keep moving when the lure stops. Silicone and soft plastic need water flow to work, so the moment you pause a jig the action dies. A feather-dressed hook keeps breathing on a dead stop, opening and closing with the smallest current or the slightest rock of the boat. That pause is when a following fish commits, which is why feathered tail hooks have survived on trolling lures, jigs, sabiki and streamers for well over a century. These are high-quality natural feathers with strong fibre texture, soft and light enough to tie easily but mature enough to hold shape through repeated casts.

Key Features

  • High-quality natural feathers with excellent flexibility and movement in water
  • Keeps working on the pause, when hard and soft plastics stop moving
  • Strong fibre texture that holds shape and resists damage over long sessions
  • Soft and lightweight, easy to tie and secure to hooks or rigs
  • Seven colours: black, white, orange, red, yellow, light green and dark green
  • Suits fly tying, custom jigs, dressed trebles and lure decoration
  • Freshwater and saltwater use

How To Use It

  • Dressing a treble tail hook — Pair two feathers back to back so the curves oppose each other, sit them along the hook shank, and bind them down with tying thread just behind the eye. Seal the wraps with superglue or UV resin. Opposed curves stop the dressing spinning on the retrieve.
  • Feathered jig and assist hooks — Tie a short, dense bunch to an assist cord or jig head collar. Keep it just past the hook bend so short-strikers still find the point.
  • Trolling and casting feather lures — Feathers behind a lead or chrome head are the traditional dressing for surface-feeding pelagics. Run them behind a boat at speed or cast to busting fish.
  • Sabiki and dropper rigs — A few fibres per hook is enough. Overdressing a small hook stops it hooking cleanly.
  • Blend with thread or skirt — Tie a base of feather for movement, then add two or three strands of aurora, luminous or UV thread for flash. The feather supplies the action, the thread supplies the light.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — Home-dressed trebles and assist hooks for queenfish (talang), trevally (gerepoh) and small tuna off headlands and reef edges; feathered droppers for scad and mackerel from kelong and jetties.
  • North America — Bucktail-and-feather jigs for striped bass, bluefish and fluke; feathered trebles on trout and bass lures; classic streamer and saltwater fly patterns.
  • Japan & East Asia — Self-tied assist hooks for slow-pitch jigging, feather dressings on tairaba and inchiku, and sabiki-zuri rigs for aji and saba.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Feathered trolling rigs for tuna and mackerel off Australia and in the Gulf; mackerel feathers from UK and Irish piers and boats; trout and salmon streamers across Europe.
