Megabass Prop Darter 80 — 80.5mm 7g Floating Propeller Lure

The Prop Darter 80 is a floating surface bait that combines a darter lip with an asymmetric rear propeller, so it works the top of the water column two ways at once. The Chopper Prop is deliberately uneven: instead of a smooth even buzz it throws irregular splashes, turbulence and bubble trails, the signature of a baitfish struggling on the surface rather than one swimming calmly. Ahead of it sits a modified Trick Darter lip, which turns rod jerks into a sharp side-to-side dart and settles into a tight wobble on a slow retrieve. A high centre of gravity keeps the floating posture stable at rest and helps the 80.5mm, 7g body cast accurately for its size. Built by Megabass and ITO Engineering in Japan.

Key Features

  • Floating surface-wake lure, 80.5mm, 7g (1/4 oz)
  • Asymmetric Chopper Prop generating irregular splashes, turbulence and bubble trails
  • Modified Trick Darter lip for sharp darting on jerks and a tight wobble on slow retrieves
  • High centre-of-gravity balance for a stable floating posture and accurate casting
  • Runs across or just under the surface, leaving a rolling wake
  • Compact profile that still creates commotion in open water
  • Fitted with #6 treble hooks, two per lure
  • Made in Japan by Megabass / ITO Engineering; five colour patterns

How To Fish It

  • Steady wake retrieve — Wind slowly and evenly so the prop turns continuously and the body pushes a visible V-wake. Hold the rod tip high to keep the bait on the surface, lower to let it run just beneath.
  • Twitch–pause–twitch — Two short twitches to make it dart and spit, then a full stop while the prop stops turning and the bait sits. The pause is where a following fish decides.
  • Burn and stop — A few fast turns to bring the prop up on the surface, then kill it dead. The sudden silence after loud commotion is a strong reaction trigger in warm water.
  • Work the low light — Early mornings, dusk and overcast days over calm or lightly stained water are the highest-percentage conditions. Fish it along weed edges, timber, drains and shade lines.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — Giant snakehead (toman) and forest snakehead (haruan) over weed and lily edges, hampala barb (sebarau) on reservoir points, barramundi (siakap) at mangrove drains, and jungle perch in clear streams.
  • North America — Largemouth and smallmouth bass around grass, docks and laydowns; also pickerel and shallow-feeding striped bass in low light.
  • Japan & East Asia — Black bass on lakes and reservoirs, where prop baits are a standard summer and autumn pattern; light seabass work in calm harbours.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Australian bass, saratoga and sooty grunter in impoundments and snag-lined rivers; perch, chub, asp and small pike on European lakes and canals.
