Major Craft Squid Metal Game GSKS Sutte Jig 56 g / 75 g

The GSKS is a weighted metal sutte for vertical squid fishing from boats, jetties and other deep-water marks. A sutte is dropped straight down and worked with short lifts and long pauses, unlike an egi, which is cast and jerked. The GSKS body is streamlined rather than blunt, so it sinks steadily and stays under the rod tip when the tide is running instead of swinging away on the drop. The cloth-wrapped surface gives a natural squid-like texture, the stripe pattern and high-intensity luminous sections carry the visual work in deep water, and a reinforced front loop takes the leader. Two tiers of crown hooks at the tail give broad tentacle contact.

Two weights, two jobs. Sutte weights use the Japanese go scale of 3.75 g per unit, so #15 is 56 g and #20 is 75 g. Use 56 g in moderate depth and slack tide, on lighter tackle, and when squid are sitting high in the water. Move to 75 g for deeper drops, running tide, or any time the line angles away from vertical. Fishing too light in current is the most common reason a drop produces nothing.

Not the same as the GSSS. The GSKS is the striped pattern in colours #09 and #10. The GSSS is the polka-dot, red-head pattern in #11 and #12 and adds a lighter 45 g size.

Key Features

  • Weighted metal-game sutte with a streamlined body that holds its line in current
  • Cloth-wrapped outer surface with a high-contrast striped pattern
  • High-intensity luminous sections for deep and low-light water
  • Realistic 3D eye, durable painted head and a reinforced front loop
  • Double-tier squid crown hooks with many fine points
  • Two weights: #15 / 56 g and #20 / 75 g, in colours #09 and #10

How To Fish It

  • Drop and count the layer — Send it to the bottom, then wind up a set number of turns. Squid hold in a band, often well off the bottom; repeat the count that produced.
  • Short lift, controlled drop, dead stop — Lift 30–50 cm, lower under control, then hold still for several seconds. The take lands in the pause and feels like the jig going heavy, going light, or not sinking.
  • Run a floating sutte above it — The standard ika-metal rig ties a buoyant uki-sutte to a short branch line 40–60 cm above the metal. The GSKS holds the depth; the soft one hangs level and picks off squid that will not take a hard bait.
  • Never strike — wind instead — A squid hugs the jig with its arms, it does not bite. Sweep gently into the weight and wind steadily under constant tension; pumping the rod creates slack and loses the squid.
  • Charge the glow — Hold the luminous sections under the boat lamp for twenty to thirty seconds before each drop, and work the shaded edge of the light pool.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — Candat sotong night boats for bigfin reef squid (sotong torak) and cuttlefish (sotong katak) off Terengganu, Pahang and Johor, plus deep jetty marks.
  • North America — Market squid on West Coast squid boats and lit California harbours, dropped vertically down the light line.
  • Japan & East Asia — Ika-metal and omorig for kensaki-ika, yariika and surume-ika; also Korean and Taiwanese night squid boats.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Southern calamari and cuttlefish over reef and weed in southern Australia; European squid worked vertically on Mediterranean marks.
