Major Craft Squid Metal Game GSSS Sutte Jig 45 g / 56 g / 75 g

The GSSS is a weighted metal sutte for vertical squid and cuttlefish fishing. A sutte is not an egi: an egi is cast and jerked, a sutte is dropped straight down and worked with short lifts and long pauses. The GSSS has a dense, balanced body that sinks efficiently and holds its line in current, so it reaches the depth squid are actually holding at. A textured cloth covering, polka-dot pattern, red head and 3D eye give it a clear visual target, ultra-bright luminous areas take over once light runs out, and two crowns of fine stainless hooks cover a wide area when a squid pulls it in.

Sizes and how they are numbered. Sutte weights follow the Japanese go scale of 3.75 g per unit: #12 is 45 g, #15 is 56 g, #20 is 75 g. Pick the lightest one that still reaches the squid layer and stays under the rod tip: 45 g for shallower water, slack tide and light tackle; 56 g as the everyday middle; 75 g for depth, running tide and windy drifts. The right weight changes with the tide across a night.

Not the same as the GSKS. This is the polka-dot, red-head pattern in colours #11 and #12, and the only one of the two offered in 45 g. The GSKS is the striped pattern in #09 and #10.

Key Features

  • Weighted metal sutte for vertical squid fishing in three weights
  • Textured cloth-wrapped exterior with a contrasting polka-dot pattern and red head
  • Ultra-bright luminous dots for night and deep-water visibility
  • Realistic 3D eye; balanced profile for controlled sinking
  • Double stainless crown hooks with many fine points, and a strong front ring

How To Fish It

  • Drop and count the layer — Send it to the bottom, then wind up a set number of turns. Squid hold in a band that is often well off the bottom; repeat the count that produced.
  • Short lift, controlled drop, dead stop — Lift 30–50 cm, lower under control, then hold still for several seconds. The take lands in the pause and feels like the jig going heavy, going light, or simply not sinking.
  • Add a floating sutte above it — The standard ika-metal rig hangs a buoyant uki-sutte on a short branch line 40–60 cm above the metal. The metal carries the rig down; the soft one hangs level and takes squid that will not commit to a harder bait.
  • Never strike — wind instead — A squid hugs the jig with its arms, it does not bite. Sweep gently into the weight and wind steadily under constant tension; pumping the rod creates slack and loses the squid.
  • Charge the glow — Hold the luminous dots under the boat lamp before each drop, and work the shaded edge of the light pool.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — Candat sotong night boats for bigfin reef squid (sotong torak) and cuttlefish (sotong katak) off Terengganu, Pahang and Johor, plus deep jetty marks.
  • North America — Market squid on West Coast squid boats and lit California harbours, dropped vertically down the light line.
  • Japan & East Asia — The technique it was built for: ika-metal and omorig for kensaki-ika, yariika and surume-ika; also Korean and Taiwanese night squid boats.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Southern calamari and cuttlefish over reef and weed in southern Australia; European squid worked vertically on Mediterranean marks.
