Decoy DJ-90 Light Assist Hook — Made In Japan
The DJ-90 Light Assist is a small, made-up assist rig built for light casting games — the shore and small-boat fishing aimed at young amberjack (tsubasu, wakashi) and mackerel rather than at offshore bluewater fish. The hook is a fine wire pattern that penetrates without needing a hard strike, which matters when the rod is light and the line is thin. It is mounted on an outward-facing, stepped assist system: the points face away from the jig body and sit at different heights, so a fish swiping at the head of a small jig meets a point rather than a flat shank. The connection between the assist cord and the split ring runs through a solid oval ring with no weld, which removes the slack that normally sits in a light assist and lets the hook set on the first pull. Everything is finished in NS Black to keep the rig discreet, and a split ring is supplied fitted.
Within Decoy's light assist range the DJ-90 sits in the middle. The DJ-91 Light Game Assist is the micro end, built for 2–10 g jigs. The DJ-93 Light Game Twin is a twin built around jigs of roughly 28 g. The DJ-90 covers the light casting class between and above them, and the DJ-81 Powerful Assist and DJ-82 Twin Assist take over once you move to full offshore jigging weights.
Key Features
- Small assist rig for light casting games and small pelagic fish
- Fine wire hook that sets cleanly on light rods and thin line
- Outward-facing, stepped assist configuration for hook-up rate
- Weld-free solid oval ring between assist cord and split ring, removing slack
- Split ring supplied fitted — ready to go straight onto a jig
- NS Black (black nickel) finish throughout for a low-visibility rig
- Made in Japan by Katsuichi; supplied here in #2
How To Rig It
- Straight onto the jig nose — The split ring is already on, so open it onto the jig's front eye and fish. No solid ring or extra hardware is needed for this class of rig.
- Cast, count, retrieve — Cast past the school, count the jig down to the depth showing fish, then work a fast one-pitch retrieve with short pauses. Small pelagics almost always take on the pause or on the first turn after it.
- Let the fine wire work — Lift into the fish rather than striking. The point is thin enough to bite on rod load alone, and a hard strike on light line is the most common way to pull it.
- Rear treble optional — A front assist alone keeps the jig swimming clean and the fish easier to release. Add a rear treble only where the fishery and its rules allow it.
Target Species By Region
- Southeast Asia — Kembung (Indian mackerel), small trevally, queenfish (talang) and small barracuda from jetties, breakwaters and rock walls on small metals.
- North America — Spanish mackerel, bluefish, bonito, school stripers and jack crevalle from piers, jetties and the surf.
- Japan & East Asia — The fishery it was designed for: light shore jigging for tsubasu and wakashi (young buri), saba and soda-gatsuo.
- Australia, Middle East & Europe — Australian salmon, tailor and small kingfish off rock and breakwall; small queenfish in the Gulf; mackerel, garfish-feeding bass and pollack on European shore marks.
