GAMAKATSU - JIGGING HOOK SLJ TUNED329 MADE IN JAPAN
Gamakatsu Jigging Hook S.L.J. Tuned 329 (Made In Japan)
S.L.J. stands for Super Light Jigging — working 30–100 g metal jigs on light spinning or baitcast tackle in relatively shallow water, usually 20–60 m over reef, rubble and sand edges. It has grown fast because it puts reef fish within reach of ordinary light tackle: small jigs fall naturally, thin PE cuts current well, and one rod covers grouper, snapper, trevally and mackerel through a day. The hook is the weak link in that system — fine enough not to kill the action of a 40 g jig, yet strong enough for a fish a heavy outfit would normally be brought out for. The S.L.J. Tuned 329 is Gamakatsu's answer: built on the proven Worm 329 profile with input from pro staff member and SLJ pioneer Go Nakamura, balancing fast engagement, low-resistance penetration and dependable holding in a light-wire hook.
Key Features
- Purpose-built for super-light jigging hook-up and holding requirements
- Designed with input from Gamakatsu pro staff member Go Nakamura
- Based on the proven Worm 329 geometry, tuned for fast initial engagement
- Sharp point and light-wire construction penetrate with reduced resistance
- Curved profile and micro barb maintain grip through the fight
- Partially flattened construction for strength and structural stability
- Wide spade-style head gives a secure binding surface for assist cord
- Nickel finish; six sizes from #4 to #3/0
How To Rig It
- Front twin assist — The standard SLJ rig: two hooks on short PE cord to a solid ring at the jig head, points outward, cord short enough that the points sit no further back than a third of the body.
- Add a rear single — Mackerel, small trevally and grouper often hit the tail. A single on a short cord at the rear ring converts those strikes, at the cost of more snagging on rough ground.
- Fish it light and let it fall — Drop to bottom, wind up two or three turns and work short, sharp lifts with a slack pause between. Most SLJ takes come on the fall as the jig flutters, which is exactly the moment the fine wire and fast engagement of this hook earn their keep.
- Drag, not muscle — On light wire you set the hook with the rod and hold with a smooth drag. Lock down on a grouper over reef and you will straighten a hook that would have held on a soft, progressive drag.
- Bind on the wide head — Whip the assist cord over the flattened spade head and finish with thread and glue; the wide head stops the binding creeping under load.
Target Species By Region
- Southeast Asia — The core SLJ ground: grouper (kerapu), red snapper (ikan merah), Spanish mackerel (tenggiri), queenfish (talang) and small giant trevally (gerepoh) over shallow reef and rubble on day boats.
- North America — Sea bass, vermilion snapper, small grouper and bonito on Gulf and Atlantic inshore reefs; rockfish and lingcod on Pacific structure.
- Japan & East Asia — The style's origin: madai, kasago and other ne-zakana on light jigs, plus small buri and sawara.
- Australia, Middle East & Europe — Snapper and coral trout on Australian inshore reefs; hamour and queenfish in the Gulf; dentex, pollack and small amberjack on Mediterranean and Atlantic marks.
