Hinotsu Kaizo Lead Sutte With Squid Hook 75g / 94g / 113g / 150g

The Kaizo is a lead-weighted sutte — a cloth-wrapped squid jig with the weight built into the head instead of relying on a separate sinker. That puts it between the two ends of the tackle box: the soft body and natural fall squid respond to in a traditional sutte, with enough mass to fish depth and current that would sweep an unweighted sutte off the mark. The reinforced lead head and cloth wrapping stand up to repeated use, the luminous and UV finishes keep it visible in deep or dark water, and the stainless crown hooks grip without tearing the mantle. Four weights and five colours cover most boat squid work, from an inshore night drift to deeper offshore ground.

Key Features

  • Weighted lead body for fast sinking and control in strong current
  • Four weights: 75g, 94g, 113g and 150g
  • Stainless-steel crown hook prongs for a strong grip that does not tear the squid
  • Luminous / UV body finish for low light and deep water
  • Five proven colour patterns: RHGB, PK, RHWB, RHYB and RZ
  • Balanced design for a stable sinking posture and reduced tangling
  • Strong cloth wrapping over a reinforced lead head for a long working life
  • Suits squid and cuttlefish on both inshore and offshore ground

How To Fish It

  • Choosing the weight — Match depth, current and boat drift speed, and use the lightest jig that still holds a near-vertical line. Roughly: 75g for shallow ground or slack water, 94–113g for a working tide at moderate depth, 150g for deep marks, running current or a boat pushed along by wind. Line angling away hard means go heavier; a lifeless, over-fast drop means go lighter.
  • Fished as the main jig — Drop to the bottom, wind up 3–5 turns with small shakes of the rod tip, then stop dead and hold for several seconds. Squid attach on the pause. Search upward in stages until you find the holding depth, then work that band.
  • Fished as a dropper — On an ika-metal rig this can also ride on a short branch line 30–50 cm above a metal lead jig, where the metal sets the rhythm and the softer cloth body takes most of the bites.
  • Do not strike, wind steadily — A take registers as extra weight, or a tip that stops springing back. Lean the rod over slowly to load it, then wind at one constant speed to the boat. Pumping the rod puts slack in the line and squid come off — crown hooks have no barbs.
  • Charge the glow — Hold luminous colours under the boat's deck light or a UV torch for 20–30 seconds before each drop, and again whenever the glow fades.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — Sotong (bigfin reef squid) and cuttlefish on night boat trips from Malaysian, Thai, Vietnamese and Indonesian ports, worked over reef edges, wrecks and lit anchorages.
  • North America — Market squid and Humboldt squid on Pacific night charters, and squid taken deliberately as fresh bait for rockfish, halibut and tuna trips.
  • Japan & East Asia — Kensaki-ika, yariika and surume-ika on boat squid trips, and aoriika where the drift runs too deep or too fast for shore eging tackle.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Southern calamari and arrow squid from boats and deep jetties; cuttlefish on Gulf marks; European squid and cuttlefish on Mediterranean and Atlantic night grounds.

Recommended Pairing

  • A light boat or ika-metal rod with a sensitive tip, rated to handle the weight you plan to fish
  • PE 0.6–1.0 braid with a 2–3 m fluorocarbon leader; thinner line cuts current and keeps the jig under the boat
  • A 2500–3000 size spinning reel or small baitcaster with a smooth start-up drag
  • Carry one luminous and one darker pattern in each weight — squid switch preference through the night
