Hayabusa Shunkan Assist Hook Single / Double — FS453 / FS455 / FS456 / FS457

Shunkan (瞬貫) means instant penetration, and it is Hayabusa's name for a fluorine-coated hook point rather than a hook shape. The coating gives the point a very low friction surface, so it starts cutting on contact instead of waiting for the angler to load the rod — Hayabusa describe it as piercing on a mere touch. That matters most on the takes you never feel properly: a fish that swipes at a jig, or one that eats on a slack-line fall. These are finished assist sets for metal jigs, tied on a coreless hybrid PE cord that stays firm without a stiffening core, so the hook stands away from the jig instead of collapsing against it.

Four models cover the two things worth changing on an assist: hook count and cord length. FS453 is the single, three sets to a pack; FS455, FS456 and FS457 are doubles at 1 cm, 2 cm and 3 cm cord, two sets to a pack.

Key Features

  • Fluorine-coated shunkan point — low friction, penetrates on contact
  • Coreless hybrid PE assist cord: firm and tangle-resistant without a stiffening core
  • FS453 single, three sets per pack
  • FS455 / FS456 / FS457 doubles at 1 cm, 2 cm and 3 cm cord, two sets per pack
  • Five sizes, #1 through #4/0
  • 100 lb cord on #1 to #2/0, 150 lb on #3/0 and #4/0
  • The same shunkan point is used on Hayabusa's egi hook crowns

How To Rig It

  • Attach at the jig eye — Run the assist onto a solid ring, then join that to the jig's nose split ring. Cord bearing on a split-ring seam is the usual reason an assist fails, and no coating saves a cut cord.
  • Front, rear, or both — Nose mounting is standard for vertical and high-pitch jigging, where fish attack the head of a rising jig. Slow pitch, where the jig falls flat, often runs an assist at both ends.
  • Pick the cord length for the jig body — The 1 cm FS455 keeps both points tight to the body, the cleanest option on short or narrow jigs. The 2 cm FS456 is the general-purpose length. The 3 cm FS457 gives real reach on long, wide or big-headed jigs, at the cost of wrapping the leader more often on a fast drop.
  • Single or double — FS455 to FS457 convert more of the half-hearted swipes you get from following fish. FS453 fouls far less on rock, rope and leader, so keep the single for foul ground and for jigs already carrying a rear hook.
  • Look after the coating — A fluorine layer is thin. Check the point after every fish and after any contact with structure, and retire a set as soon as the cord starts to fluff; the cord fails long before the hook does.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — Reef, wreck and rig jigging for kerapu (grouper), jenahak (golden snapper), gerepoh (giant trevally), talang (queenfish) and tenggiri off Rompin, Sabah and eastern Indonesia.
  • North America — Amberjack, grouper and snapper on Gulf and Atlantic wrecks; yellowtail, lingcod and rockfish on Pacific vertical jigging trips.
  • Japan & East Asia — The home fishery: buri and hiramasa on high-pitch jigging, madai and kasago on slow pitch, and tachiuo on night boats.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Yellowtail kingfish and samsonfish on Australian reefs, cobia and hamour in the Gulf, and pollack and cod over European wrecks.
