Hayabusa EB930 Treble Hook TBL 930

The TBL930 is Hayabusa's standard treble — the reference hook in their range rather than a specialist gauge. It pairs straight hook points with a round bend: the round bend spreads load evenly around the whole hook and gives a wide, forgiving contact angle, while a straight point drives in along the line of pull instead of rolling like an inturned point. Hayabusa say the design was scrutinised from the choice of steel onwards, aiming at the balance of strength and sharpness a treble has to hold. The material is Japanese carbon steel. Stocked here in four sizes and two finishes: bright Nickel and rust-resistant Black Nickel, six hooks per pack. Most trebles are bought to replace the hooks a hard lure came with, and this is the pattern to reach for when you want the lure to keep behaving as it did out of the box.

How To Rig It

• Replacing factory hooks — Open the split ring with pliers, slide the old hook off and the new one on. Change every hook on the lure at once — one blunt treble will still lose fish.
• Choosing the size — Match what you removed. Treble sizes run the Western way, so #8 is the smallest here and #2 the largest. Going a size up adds reach but slows a floating lure's rise; going down restores a wounded action but gives away hold. The belly and tail trebles should not be able to touch.
• Picking the finish — Nickel adds a small point of flash on a clear-water plug. Black Nickel is the choice for salt and brackish water, and for pressured or very clear water where you would rather the hooks disappeared.
• Keeping them sharp — Test the point on a thumbnail after casting over rock or oyster. A treble that skates rather than bites is the usual reason a fish drops off seconds after the strike.

• Southeast Asia — Rehooking minnows, poppers and stickbaits for barramundi (siakap), giant snakehead (toman), hampala barb (sebarau) and peacock bass inland; queenfish (talang), trevally and grouper (kerapu) around jetties and river mouths.
• North America — Largemouth and smallmouth bass on crankbaits, jerkbaits and topwater; walleye and pike on plugs; striped bass and redfish inshore.
• Japan & East Asia — Seabass (suzuki) on minnows and vibrations, black bass on hard baits, and rockfish and hirame on shore-cast plugs.
• Australia, Middle East & Europe — Barramundi, flathead and Australian salmon in estuaries; queenfish on Gulf flats; pike, zander and perch on cranks in European lakes and canals.

Recommended Pairing

• #8 and #6 for small minnows, shallow cranks and light topwater, 6–12 lb class
• #4 for mid-size crankbaits, jerkbaits and small poppers, 10–20 lb class
• #2 for larger casting plugs and inshore saltwater lures, 20–40 lb braid with a leader
• Split rings rated at or above your line class — after a hook upgrade the ring is usually the weak point
• Add a short wire trace for tenggiri and barracuda; crush the barb where local rules require it
