Hayabusa Beak Hook Pack ET29171 — Made In Japan

Beak and octopus are two names for one shape: short shank, deep rounded bend, wide gape, and a point curving inward like a bird’s beak. It dominates bait fishing for two reasons: the short shank vanishes inside a prawn, worm or cut strip so the bait keeps its natural outline, and the inward-turned point removes the need for a hard strike — as the fish turns away the point rides up into the corner of the jaw and seats itself. Hayabusa list this one as Beak Ringed Black Nickel, product number ET29171, and describe the pattern as a twisted hook: the point is set away from the shank’s centre line, which is what puts steel in front of a fish that takes broadside. The build is high-carbon steel, forged so the flattened section stiffens the bend, with a turned-up ringed eye that sets a working angle when snelled and black nickel plating to keep it dark against bait. Twelve sizes from #10 to #6/0 make this the widest ladder in the ET family — one shape from a sandworm on a jetty rig to a whole squid on reef.

Key Features

  • Beak (octopus-family) profile — short shank, deep rounded bend, inward-curved point
  • Reverse or twisted geometry: the point sits off the centre line, improving exposure on side-on takes
  • Turned-up ringed eye for mono, fluorocarbon or braid, and a good snelling angle for bait rigs
  • Forged flattened section that strengthens the bend against deformation
  • Sharp barbed point for fast penetration and a hold that resists backing out
  • High-carbon steel, the current Hayabusa Beak-series specification
  • Black nickel finish (Hayabusa specify BN) for a dark, low-reflection presentation
  • Twelve sizes, #10 through #6/0, at 4 to 10 hooks per pack

How To Rig It

  • Live or dead prawn — Point once through the last tail segment for a bait that keeps kicking, or thread a peeled prawn up the shank for casting distance. #4–#1 for small prawn, #2/0–#3/0 for large.
  • Sandworm and worm baits — Thread a section over the point and up the shank in #10–#4, leaving a short tail free to move. The standard estuary and jetty rig for croaker, whiting and bream.
  • Cut fish and squid strip — Hook the skin side twice so the strip lies straight, and keep the bait no wider than the gape or it will mask the point.
  • Paternoster or running sinker — Short snelled droppers above a sinker for pilings and reef edges, or a sliding sinker to a swivel and a long leader on sand so a wary fish moves off before feeling weight.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — Croaker (gelama), catfish (duri), javelin grunter (kaci) and whiting on estuary mud in the small sizes; barramundi (siakap) and mangrove jack around mangrove and jetty pilings; grouper (kerapu), snapper (merah), golden snapper (jenahak) and emperor (lencam) on reef in the /0 sizes.
  • North America — Mangrove and red snapper, grouper and sheepshead on structure, catfish in rivers, and croaker, porgy and perch on piers in the small sizes.
  • Japan & East Asia — Dozuki (胴突き) boat dropper rigs for kasago, mebaru and ainame, and bukkomi (ブッコミ) bottom baits from breakwaters for kurodai and anago.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Bream, whiting, flathead and snapper in Australian estuaries; hamour and sheri in the Gulf; cod, pollack, plaice and bass on European beaches and rock marks.

Sizing is Western: #10 is the smallest, stepping up through #1, after which #1/0 runs up to #6/0, the largest. Material: high-carbon steel, forged, black nickel plated.

Choosing a size. Beak sizes are read off the bait, not the fish — the gape should clear the bait with the point standing free. #10–#4 for worm and prawn tails, #2–#1/0 for whole small prawn and strip baits, #2/0–#6/0 for big prawn, squid and live baitfish on reef. Against the ET0187 Chinu it is the wider-gape, deeper-bend option for soft bait; against the ET28171 O’Shaughnessy it is the short-shank choice when the bait must hide the hook rather than stretch along it.

Recommended Pairing

  • #10–#4: light estuary and jetty rods, 6–12 lb line, worm, prawn and small squid baits
  • #2–#1/0: all-round bait sizes, 12–25 lb braid with a 20–40 lb fluorocarbon leader
  • #2/0–#6/0: whole prawn, live baitfish and cut baits on reef and structure, 40–80 lb leader
  • Snell the turned-up eye for bottom rigs; add a short wire trace where toothy species feed
