Gamakatsu Treble Hook RB MH (Made In Japan)

A treble is three points on one shank — the hook nearly every hard lure ships with. The code says what this one is: RB is round bend, the even circular bend that spreads load across the whole hook and gives a wide, forgiving contact angle; MH is medium heavy, thicker than a standard freshwater treble but not the extra-heavy gauge used for tuna and GT. That is the gauge most anglers need: strong enough for salt water and big fish, fine enough that the point still drives in on a light rod. It is built from Gamakatsu’s Tournament Grade Wire, finished with Hyper Shield anti-corrosion plating, and uses a longer shank than the SP series plus a Magic Eye that opens a split ring without pliers.

Key Features

  • Round bend geometry and medium heavy wire — the upgrade gauge for salt water and larger fish
  • Tournament Grade Wire (TGW) balancing strength, toughness and sharpness
  • Hyper Shield corrosion-resistant plating
  • Magic Eye: the shaped eye twists into a split ring by hand, without pliers and without deforming the ring
  • Longer RB shank than the SP series, improving penetration
  • Three sizes: #6, #4 and #1

How To Rig It

  • Replacing blunt or opened factory hooks — Stock trebles blunt on rock and straighten under drag. Open the split ring with the Magic Eye, swap in the same size, and the lure keeps its balance.
  • Upgrading a freshwater lure for salt water — MH wire and Hyper Shield plating are the usual first modification before fishing a bass or trout plug over reef, rock walls or surf.
  • Choosing the size — Match the hook you removed. As a check, the front and rear trebles should not be able to touch, and the points should not foul the belly. Treble sizes run the Western way: #6 is the smallest here, #1 the largest.
  • Watch the buoyancy — Heavier wire slows a floating lure’s rise and can turn a floater into a slow-rising bait. Test it beside the boat before committing.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — Upgrade hooks for plugs and poppers: barramundi (siakap), giant snakehead (toman), hampala barb (sebarau), peacock bass, queenfish and trevally around jetties, mangrove edges and rock walls.
  • North America — Largemouth and smallmouth bass, pike and walleye on crankbaits and jerkbaits; striped bass and redfish inshore.
  • Japan & East Asia — Seabass (suzuki) on minnows and vibrations, plus black porgy, rockfish, hirame and madai — the species Gamakatsu lists for this pattern.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Barramundi and flathead in estuaries; queenfish on Gulf flats; pike, zander and perch in European lakes and canals.

Specifications

Size Pieces Per Pack Wire SKU
#6 6 Medium Heavy 942366242
#4 6 Medium Heavy 942366228
#1 6 Medium Heavy 942366167

Gamakatsu produces the RB pattern from #14 up to 2/0; the three sizes above are stocked here.

Recommended Pairing

  • #6 for small minnows and light plugs, 6–12 lb class
  • #4 for mid-size crankbaits, jerkbaits and small poppers, 10–20 lb class
  • #1 for larger casting plugs and inshore saltwater lures, 20–40 lb braid and leader
  • Use split rings rated at or above your line class — the ring, not the hook, is the usual weak point after an upgrade
