Gamakatsu Taman Special Hook (Made In Japan)

Taman is the local name in Okinawa and the wider tropical Pacific for the spangled emperor (Lethrinus nebulosus) — a thick-lipped, hard-mouthed reef fish that eats a big bait, turns immediately and runs back into coral. Taman fishing is largely a long-cast shore game over shallow reef, and it destroys ordinary bait hooks. This pattern was built around that problem by dedicated taman anglers: a short shank so the hook is compact and hard to lever, a wide bend that still holds a large natural bait, a point angled slightly inward so it seats in a hard mouth and stays there, and a strong ring eye for thick leader. Emperors, snapper and grouper are the same class of fish across Southeast Asia, so the hook transfers directly to Malaysian, Indonesian and Philippine reef and jetty fishing.

How To Rig It

• Long-cast shore rig — Running sinker above a swivel, heavy leader to the hook, cast well out over shallow reef. Set the drag firm; the first run is the one that reaches coral.
• Big natural baits — Whole prawn, squid head, crab or cut fish. Bury the shank in the bait and leave the wide bend and point exposed.
• Jetty and rock bottom rig — Fish a single hook on a short dropper hard against pilings and rock walls; lift steadily rather than striking.
• Boat bottom fishing — Drop the same rig onto reef edges in current, with enough lead to stay near vertical.

• Southeast Asia — The home water for this style: emperor (lencam), snapper (merah), grouper (kerapu), coral trout and trevally over reef; barramundi (siakap) and threadfin from rock walls and jetties; croaker (gelama) on the smaller sizes.
• North America — Red and mangrove snapper, grouper and black drum on Gulf and Florida bottom and bridge structure.
• Japan & East Asia — Taman (hamafuefuki) from Okinawan reef flats, plus gaara (trevally), red sea bream and hata (grouper) on heavy shore and boat bait rigs.
• Australia, Middle East & Europe — Spangled emperor and coral trout on northern Australian reef; sheri and hamour in the Gulf and Red Sea; meagre and large bream on Mediterranean beaches.

Specifications

Sizes follow the Japanese gō (号) system: the number rises as the hook gets larger, the reverse of Western numbering. #16 is the smallest, #24 the largest.
