Cover finesse is a contradiction held together by tackle: a finesse presentation — small worm, slow fall, light line on a bait finesse reel — taken into the places finesse gear is normally kept out of, such as laydowns, flooded timber, lily stems and bridge pilings. That is where the biggest fish sit, and where light tackle loses them. The Worm220 Cover Finesse HD answers the hook half of the problem. Its base is the Big Bite Finesse Worm20, a masubari (cross hook) built for bait-finesse tackle but wired for genuinely big bass, so it holds shape when a fish is turned out of a snag on locked drag instead of straightening the way a true finesse hook would. Onto that Katsuichi set a brush guard — the HD refinement, revised to cope with more kinds of cover and survive hard use. The guard is not fixed: strands can be trimmed out to soften it, or spread into a fan to widen the arc it protects. NS Black finish, six sizes from #4 to #3/0.

How To Rig It

• Wacky rig — Pass the point through the middle of a stick worm at right angles so both halves hang level, ideally through an O-ring. Pitch to the edge of cover and let it sink on slack line, watching the line for the take.
• Neko rig — Push a nail weight into the nose of the worm and cross-hook it about a third of the way back. The head digs in and the tail stands and shakes on small rod-tip taps — the presentation that draws bites among branches.
• Tuning the guard — Start with the full brush. If fish are being missed, trim one or two strands; if the hook still fouls, fan the rest into a V to cover a wider arc ahead of the point.
• Fish it like cover, not like finesse — Once the fish is on, apply pressure immediately and lead it out of the structure. The heavy wire is there so you can.
