Decoy DJ-82 Twin Assist Hook — Made In Japan

The DJ-82 Twin Assist is a two-hook assist rig for metal jigs, built from the same components as Decoy's DJ-81 Powerful Assist, so the hook and cord are the heavy-duty items from that model rather than a lighter derivative. Being a twin type, it can be run as a front hook or as a rear hook, and the maker notes that the length of both ends can be adjusted freely when setting it up, which is what lets one pack cover several rigging methods. Two hooks add visual appeal on the drop and, once a fish is on, give a second point of contact to fight against. Supplied in gold with Aqua Block coating in #M, #L and #LL, three per pack.

Where the DJ-54 Dancing Jack puts two points on one shank, the DJ-82 puts two separate hooks on their own tethers. That is the real choice: two independent hooks find a mouth on a swiping take far more often, at the cost of more line to tangle and more metal to find structure.

How To Rig It

• Twin or single — A twin converts more of the half-hearted swipes that a single assist misses, and holds better through a long fight. The trade is real: two hooks tangle around the leader on a fast drop and find rock and rope far more readily. Fish a single over foul ground and a twin over clean bottom or in open water.
• Assist length — Set the finished length to roughly one third to one half of the jig's body, ring to hook bend. Too short and the hook cannot reach a fish hitting the rear of the jig; too long and it wraps the leader every drop.
• Stagger the two ends — Because both ends are adjustable, set them at slightly different lengths so the two hooks cannot foul each other on the flutter. Equal lengths are the most common cause of a twin locking up on itself.
• Front or rear — Front mount is standard for vertical and speed jigging, where fish take the head of a rising jig. Rear mount, or front and rear together, suits slow pitch, where the jig falls flat and fish come from behind and below. Running both ends on a heavily fluttering jig is where tangles start.
• Attachment — Hang it on a solid ring, then join that to the jig with a heavy split ring. The cord should never bear on a split ring seam.

• Southeast Asia — Jigging reef and wreck marks for gerepoh (giant trevally), queenfish, tenggiri (Spanish mackerel), red snapper (ikan merah) and grouper (kerapu) off Rompin and eastern Indonesia.
• North America — Amberjack, grouper and snapper on Gulf and Atlantic wrecks; yellowtail, lingcod and rockfish on Pacific jigging trips.
• Japan & East Asia — Buri and hiramasa on vertical and speed jigging, madai and kasago on slow pitch, and tachiuo where two points matter on a short-biting fish.
• Australia, Middle East & Europe — Yellowtail kingfish and samson fish on Australian reefs; cobia, queenfish and GT in the Gulf; pollack and cod on European wreck marks.
