Hayabusa Squid Junky Live Reader Dart FS510 Egi #2.5 / #3.0

The Live Reader Dart is the first egi in Hayabusa's Squid Junky range, and unlike the sutte in the same family it is cast and jerked rather than dropped. Hayabusa built it around lifelike movement: a slim body that cuts water resistance so each jerk is easy to deliver, a sharp sideways dart on the stroke, and a flip-flap roll as the egi turns over and settles. That turn is what squid react to — a startled prawn flashes, rolls, then drifts down, and this egi repeats the sequence on every stroke. Underneath sits a thin-profile slice sinker that reduces drag on the retrieve, and the crown is Hayabusa's shunkan step-gap type, fluorine-coated so the points bite on contact rather than needing pressure.

How To Fish It

• Cast, sink, count — Let the egi sink on a controlled line while you count. Start by counting it near the bottom, then shorten the count if you find weed or foul.
• Two or three sharp jerks, then let it fall — Snap the rod tip upward in quick succession to make the egi dart, then stop and let it glide down on a semi-tight line. Nearly every take comes on that fall, felt as sudden weight or a line that stops sinking.
• Watch the line, not the rod — A squid arriving on the fall shows in the line before it shows in the rod tip. If the line goes slack early or twitches sideways, take up the slack and lean into it.
• Never strike hard — The crown points are fine and barbless. Sweep smoothly to load the line, then keep winding; a hard hookset or any slack drops the squid.
• Fish the light edge at night — From a jetty or harbour wall, cast past the light pool and work the egi back through the shadow line where squid sit facing the glare. Charge glow and UV colours under the lamp first.

Choosing #2.5 Or #3.0

• #2.5, 10 g — Shallow water, slack tide, calm nights and smaller or wary squid. The slower sink hangs longer in the strike zone, which is what you want when squid follow without committing.
• #3.0, 15 g — Wind, running tide, deeper water and longer casts. It reaches the bottom faster and stays in contact when the line is bellying, at the cost of a shorter fall.

• Southeast Asia — Bigfin reef squid (sotong torak) and cuttlefish (sotong katak) from jetties, harbour walls and rock edges around Terengganu, Johor and the Riau islands, mostly on lit night marks.
• North America — Market squid from West Coast piers and lit harbours in California, and longfin squid off Atlantic jetties in season.
• Japan & East Asia — The method's home: shore eging for aori-ika, with kensaki-ika and smaller squid on the same tackle across Japan, Korea and Taiwan.
