Decoy Y-S21 Treble Hook — Made In Japan

The Y-S21 is Decoy’s structure-oriented saltwater treble, and its geometry is the whole argument. A short shank keeps the hook tucked close to the lure body, a wide gape gives it something to bite on, and the point curves slightly inward instead of standing straight up. That curved point sits in the shadow of the bend, so it is far less likely to find rock, oyster or rubble as the lure works past, yet the round bend still spreads load evenly and holds a fish that takes short. All three legs are joined with Decoy’s Solid System welding, which is what stops a treble twisting open under sustained drag, and the vertical (tate) eye hangs the hook correctly from a split ring on any plug. Tin plating with Aqua Block treatment handles salt water. Decoy aim it at shallow ground: tidal flats, the surf zone and close-quarters boat seabass work.

How To Rig It

• Upgrading a shallow-running plug — Open the split ring, remove the factory hook and fit the same size. This is the swap to make on minnows and small poppers fished over flats and sandbars, where the old hook usually dies from rock contact rather than from fish.
• Working tight to cover — The curved point lets you throw at jetty legs, breakwater edges and mangrove roots and keep the lure swimming rather than stopping on the first hard thing it touches. Cast past the target, then bring the lure along its face.
• Choosing between the Decoy trebles — Y-F33B is the fine-wire micro hook for small plugs and light contact; Y-S21 is the structure hook for shallow salt water; Y-S81 is the heavier-wire straight-point hook for hard plugging and forceful hook-sets. Pick by water, not by size alone.
• Checking the lure after the swap — Any hook change alters balance. Drop the lure beside the boat and watch it: a floater should still sit and rise as it did, and the front and rear hooks should not be able to reach each other.

Target Species By Region

• Southeast Asia — Barramundi (siakap) around jetty pilings and mangrove edges, queenfish and small trevally off rock walls, plus hampala barb (sebarau) and peacock bass where reservoir plugs meet timber.
• North America — Striped bass, redfish and speckled trout on inshore plugs; largemouth and smallmouth bass on shallow crankbaits and jerkbaits worked through rock.
• Japan & East Asia — Its home use: seabass (suzuki) on tidal flats, in the surf and on boat games, plus hirame and kasago on shallow-water minnows.
• Australia, Middle East & Europe — Barramundi, flathead and bream in estuaries; queenfish and small grouper on Gulf flats; bass and pollack over European rock and shallow reef.

Recommended Pairing

• #8 for small shallow minnows, pencils and light freshwater plugs, 6–12 lb class
• #3 for mid-size minnows, poppers and inshore casting lures, 15–30 lb braid with a fluorocarbon or nylon leader
• Medium-light to medium plugging rod; a tip with some give keeps a short-shank hook loaded during the fight
• Fit split rings rated at or above your line class — after a hook upgrade the ring is usually the weakest part of the chain
