Yamai Suteki Plugging Double Hook MAW-1 Assist Hook — Made In Japan

The MAW-1 is a two-hook plugging assembly, and the way it is built is the reason to use it. Each hook is a Maboroshi barb hook (ring type), tied individually to its own short assist line and joined by a press ring, with both cords meeting at a single split ring. Because the two hooks are separate rather than sharing one cord, they swing wide and move independently around the ring. That widens the area a fish can be caught in as the plug comes past, and it distributes load between the two cords once a fish is on. Yamai's own account is that the system has been tested and fished worldwide.

The points are sharp and processed to stay that way, and the intended mount is on a plug in place of a treble — a swap casting anglers make for hold, for fish care, and because a double does not foul the leader the way a treble does.

One rigging warning from the maker, and it matters: fit the MAW-1 so the rear hook cannot reach the front hook. A plug with hooks that can meet will lock up on a cast and fish badly, or worse.

Key Features

  • Twin plugging assembly built from Maboroshi barb hooks (ring type)
  • Each hook tied individually to its own short assist line with a press ring
  • Both cords meet at one split ring, so the hooks swing wide and move independently
  • Load is distributed between the two cords during a fight
  • Sharp, well-processed points intended to penetrate on contact
  • Split ring can be changed to suit the target species
  • Sizes #1/0, #2/0 and #3/0; two sets per pack

How To Rig It

  • Replace a treble on a plug — Fit the MAW-1 to the belly or tail hanger of a stickbait, popper or minnow using a split ring rated above your drag. This is the assembly's designed job.
  • Check hook clearance first — Hang the plug and swing the hooks. If the rear assembly can touch the front hook, the setup is wrong — change the assembly length or the hanger position.
  • Upgrade the split ring, not the hook — The split ring is the intended tuning point. Step it up for GT and tuna, keep it lighter for smaller pelagics so the plug's action is not deadened.
  • Belly-only on stickbaits — Many casting anglers run one MAW-1 on the belly and nothing at the tail — fewer leader wraps on the cast, cleaner swimming action.
  • Size to the plug — #1/0 for compact casting plugs and light popping; #2/0 as the general size; #3/0 for full-size GT and tuna plugs.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — Gerepoh (giant trevally) on reef and atoll popping, tenggiri (Spanish mackerel), queenfish and barracuda on casting trips.
  • North America — Striped bass and bluefish on surface plugs, roosterfish on the Baja coast, and tuna on offshore casting runs.
  • Japan & East Asia — Buri, hiramasa, kanpachi and tuna on casting game; the maker names yellowtail, kingfish, yellowfin tuna, GT and tuna as the target list.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Kingfish and GT off northern Australia; queenfish and GT in the Gulf; bass and bluefin on European casting marks.
