The Anglar O’Shaughnessy 4145SS Stainless Steel Hook Pack

The O’Shaughnessy is the standard heavy bait pattern: long straight shank, deep forged bend, point in line with the eye. The 4145SS is the version that goes furthest. Thirteen sizes run from #4 all the way to #10/0 — a reach nothing else in Anglar’s stainless range has, and one matched only by the high-carbon 403. Two things follow from that top end. The eye is enlarged, so heavy mono, thick fluorocarbon or a crimped connection passes through without the knot being pinched against a tight ring. And the needle-cutting point is set inline, so a heavy hookset travels straight from the leader through the point instead of trying to roll the hook. Being stainless, it suits rigs that stay tied: traces in a boat roll all season, gear that lives in salt.

Key Features

  • Stainless steel throughout — corrosion resistance for rigs left made up
  • Ultra-sharp needle-cutting point with a pronounced retaining barb
  • Inline point for a direct pull and a controlled hookset
  • Forged, compressed body that resists opening under heavy load
  • Enlarged ringed eye for thick mono, heavy leader, wire and crimps
  • Long straight shank for strips, squid, prawn and whole baits
  • Thirteen sizes, #4 through #10/0

How To Rig It

  • Long cut bait — Lay a fillet or belly strip along the shank and thread it on twice so it sits straight; a straight bait spins and twists the leader less.
  • Whole bait on the big sizes — Bridle or pin a whole fish for shark, mulloway and large grouper. The oversized eye takes the heavy mono these baits need.
  • Heavy paternoster — Two short droppers above a heavy sinker on wreck and reef. Wind down and lean into the fish; do not strike upward on slack line.
  • Point care — Stainless is a little softer than hardened high-carbon steel; check the point after coral contact and file it back.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — Grouper (kerapu), red snapper (ikan merah) and golden snapper (jenahak) over reef and wreck; barramundi (siakap) on live bait at river mouths; stingray, shark and large catfish (duri) on surf bottom baits in the /0 sizes.
  • North America — Gulf red snapper, grouper, amberjack and cobia; tarpon and shark on whole bait; big blue and flathead catfish in the rivers.
  • Japan & East Asia — Heavy dozuki (胴突き) boat rigs for hata and kue, and nomase (ノマセ) live-bait fishing for kanpachi and hirasuzuki around structure.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Mulloway, snapper and shark on Australian bottom and beach rigs; hamour and sheri in the Gulf; conger, ling and skate over European wrecks.

The seven Anglar O’Shaughnessy hooks.

Model Material Finish Sizes Picked for
403 (1930N) High carbon Nickel, bright #18–#10/0 (23) Widest span of all, plus a big ringed eye
4002 High carbon Black, low glare #2/0–#6/0 (4) Hard cutting point in the common heavy sizes
4004 Stainless Plain #2–#6/0 (7) Everyday no-rust bait hook for rigs left made up
4009 Not stated Black #3/0 only (1) The one kirbed (offset) point in the family
4140SS Stainless Plain #4–#9/0 (12) 3X-strong wire — the heaviest build here
4143SS Stainless Plain #4–#9/0 (12) 2X-strong wire at 8/0; everyday heavy stainless
4145SS Stainless Plain #4–#10/0 (13) Large ringed eye and the longest reach in stainless

Put simply: the 403 for that size reach in high carbon and a harder point, the 4145SS for it in stainless with a bigger eye. Stainless will not rust out of a fish, so unhook releases properly rather than cutting the trace short.

Recommended Pairing

  • #4–#1: light bottom and estuary rigs, 12–20 lb line, strip and prawn baits
  • #1/0–#4/0: reef, wreck and jetty bottom fishing, 30–50 lb braid with a 40–80 lb leader
  • #5/0–#10/0: whole fish, squid and crab baits on heavy bottom or standup gear, 100–200 lb leader or a crimped trace
  • Add a wire bite trace where mackerel, barracuda or shark feed
