The Anglar Octopus Hook Platinum Pack Ringed NSB 4507 Hi-Carbon Hook

The 4507 is the heavy end of the octopus bait-hook family: the same compact, deep-bellied, inward-pointing shape that hides inside a live prawn or a cut strip, but drawn in 2X-strong wire and forged through the bend so it will not open under a tight drag. The point is kirbed and eagle-cut, the eye a solid ring for a knot, a snell or a crimp. Where the standard octopus packs run down to tiny estuary sizes, this one is weighted to the top end: #4 and #2 for general bait work, then straight to #4/0 through #8/0 for whole squid, live baitfish and big cut baits.

About the platinum finish. Plating is a trade-off, not a ranking. Black nickel is chosen when you want the hook to disappear — low glare, discreet in clear shallow water. Tin is chosen when you want a little flash beside the bait in deep or coloured water. A platinum-type plating sits at the premium end: a hard, bright, dense coating that holds its surface longer in salt and resists the light rust that dulls a cheaper finish in a damp tackle box. The cost is that it is reflective, so over clear shallow sand a black hook can still be the better call. Rinse and dry any plated hook after a salt trip, and remember that filing the point opens the steel underneath.

Key Features

  • 2X-strong reinforced wire for heavier loads and powerful fish
  • Forged hook body — compressed through the bend to resist opening
  • Deep octopus bend with a short, practical shank for compact baits
  • Kirbed (offset) point for better contact when a fish takes side-on
  • Eagle-cutting chemically sharpened point with a pronounced retaining barb
  • Solid ringed eye for heavy leader, snelled rigs and crimps
  • High-carbon steel with a corrosion-resistant plated finish
  • Seven sizes, #4 through #8/0, for both freshwater and saltwater bait fishing

How To Rig It

  • Live baitfish on the bigger sizes — Pin a live tamban, selar or small mullet through the nose for a drifted bait, or through the back just behind the dorsal to keep it swimming down. #4/0–#6/0 suits palm-size baits, #7/0–#8/0 a hand-span bait.
  • Whole squid — Pass the point through the tube twice from the tip, leaving the bend and point standing clear. The short shank keeps the whole bait compact instead of stiff and straight.
  • Snelled paternoster for reef and wreck — Snell to short heavy droppers above the sinker. Wind down onto the bite and lift; the kirbed point sets on steady pressure, not on a hard strike.
  • Small sizes for prawn and strip — #4 and #2 take a peeled prawn threaded along the shank, or a squid strip hooked twice through the skin side.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — Grouper (kerapu), snapper (ikan merah) and golden snapper (jenahak) over reef and wreck; barramundi (siakap) on live bait at jetty pilings; catfish (duri) and croaker (gelama) on estuary mud in the small sizes.
  • North America — Red and mangrove snapper, grouper and amberjack on Gulf and Atlantic structure; striped bass, halibut and big catfish on whole and cut baits.
  • Japan & East Asia — Heavy dozuki (胴突き) boat bottom rigs for hata and madai, and live-bait nomase (ノマセ) fishing for hirasuzuki and kanpachi.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Snapper, mulloway and coral trout on Australian bottom rigs; hamour and sheri on Gulf reef; conger, ling and cod on European wrecks.
