The Anglar Prawn Hook 4204

Prawn fishing covers two jobs: catching prawns — giant freshwater prawn (udang galah) and pond prawns, on a float rig and a scrap of natural bait — and mounting a prawn as bait for fish. The 4204 is built for the first, and it is the one model in the Anglar prawn range that carries both specialist features at once. It is barbless, so nothing has to be torn back out and a prawn drops off into the keep-net in a second. And it finishes in a flattened spade end instead of an eye, so the line is snelled onto the shank with nothing standing proud beside a small soft bait. The point is inline rather than kicked to one side, sending the pull straight down the shank on the lift — the right choice when steady contact is all that holds the prawn. Chemically sharpened, black nickel, nine sizes from #7 up to #2/0, twenty per pack.

Key Features

  • Barbless point — penetrates with almost no resistance and releases undersized prawns undamaged
  • Flattened spade end for snelled rigging, with no eye to bulk out a small bait
  • Inline point aligned with the shank for a direct pull on a light lift
  • Black-nickel finish — dark, low-glare, resistant to surface corrosion
  • Nine sizes including #1/0 and #2/0, twenty pieces in every size

How To Rig It

  • Snell the spade end — A spade takes no knot through an eye. Lay the tag along the shank, whip six to eight turns down over it toward the bend, pass the tag back through and draw tight so the line leaves on the point side. Check the whipping each session — a snell that rides over the spade lets go.
  • Keep the line tight — The barbless rule. Slack lets a prawn back off the point, so lift smoothly, hold steady pressure the whole way in and do not pump the rod.
  • Float rig for prawns — Small float, one micro split shot, short fluorocarbon trace. Set the bait just off bottom so the prawn can lift it without feeling the lead.
  • Baiting — Short pieces of worm or prawn flesh threaded so the point stays clear; bait slides more easily on a barbless hook, so re-bait often. In #1 and the /0 sizes, pin a live prawn through the horn on top of the head, in front of the dark spot behind the eyes.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — Giant freshwater prawn (udang galah) in Malaysian and Indonesian rivers, tiger prawn (udang harimau) in brackish stretches, and the stocked prawning ponds of Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand (bo kung), many of which ask for barbless hooks. The /0 sizes fish live prawn for barramundi (siakap) and mangrove jack.
  • North America — No comparable prawn fishery; a barbless bait hook for trout and panfish where regulations require one, and for live shrimp inshore.
  • Japan & East Asia — Tenaga-ebi (long-arm prawn) fishing on Japanese rivers and canals, where fine snelled spade-end hooks are the norm, and Taiwan's indoor prawning ponds.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Prawn baits for bream and flathead in Australian estuaries; shrimp in the Gulf; barbless-only coarse venues across Europe.

Listed largest to smallest. Western numbering: the number falls as the hook grows, and /0 sizes are larger again — #7 is the smallest here, #2/0 the largest. Finish: black nickel throughout.

Choosing within the Anglar prawn range. Six models, separated by two decisions — barb or no barb, and spade end or ring eye.

Model Point Connection Bend Sizes Pieces Per Pack
4204 Barbless, inline Flattened spade Standard prawn #7–#2/0 (9) 20
4205 Barbed, offset Flattened spade Standard prawn #7–#2/0 (9) 20
4206 Barbed, offset Ring eye Standard prawn #7–#2/0 (9) 20
4207 Barbless Ring eye Deep curve #7–#1 (7) 8–12
4208 Barbed, offset Flattened spade Slim #7–#1 (7) 13–20
4211 Barbed, offset Ring eye Wide gap #7–#1 (7) 20

The 4204 is the barbless spade — the softest-entry, fastest-unhooking option in the range, and the only barbless model that reaches the /0 sizes.

Recommended Pairing

  • Short 1.2–1.8 m prawn rod with a soft tip that holds pressure without pulling the hook
  • Small float, one or two micro split shot; supple 4–8 lb mono or fluorocarbon for the snell, since stiff leader whips onto a spade end badly
  • 1000–2500 spinning reel, light drag; barbless needs contact, not heavy pressure
  • Smallest sizes for pond prawns; #1 and the /0 sizes for large udang galah and live-prawn baits
