Decoy VJ-70 Powerful Egg Jig Head — Made In Japan

The VJ-70 Powerful Egg is Decoy's compact football head, and the two halves of the name explain it. The egg-shaped football head is wider than it is tall, so it lands on its base and stays upright rather than rolling, crawling over rock and gravel with the hook riding clear — the shape you want for dragging, not gliding. "Powerful" is the wire: this is a short, strong hook built to take the pull of a big bass on a heavy line, where a finesse head would flex open. For every weight there is a dedicated jig hook extending from the centre of the head, with an ultra-short shank and a wide gape, so a compact rubber jig or craw sits tight to the head and still leaves a large gap. A double keeper holds skirting or a soft plastic. Black nickel finish, five per pack.

How To Rig It

• Build a custom rubber jig — The double keeper is there to be tied on. Wrap a skirt to the collar, finish with thread, then add a craw trailer. The short shank keeps the finished jig compact.
• Drag on hard bottom — Let it settle, then drag slowly with the rod at 3 o'clock so the head bumps rock and gravel. The football base keeps the hook riding up. Pause every time the bottom changes.
• Stroke it off structure — Over rock piles and ledges, snap the head up half a metre and let it fall on a controlled line. Bites come as it drops, so keep the line under a finger.
• Weight to depth — 7 g for shallow gravel and still days, 10.5 g as the everyday choice on rock in 3–6 m, 14 g when wind or depth stops you feeling bottom.

• Southeast Asia — Peacock bass and hampala barb (sebarau) over rocky reservoir points, giant snakehead (toman) on deeper edges, mangrove jack around rubble.
• North America — Its core use: largemouth and smallmouth bass on rock, gravel and ledges, plus spotted bass on deep points and walleye.
• Japan & East Asia — Black bass on the rocky lakes the head was designed for, and kurodai or kasago where a heavy-wire compact head suits rock game.
