Decoy AH-7 Area Hook Type VII "Front" — Made In Japan

Area trout is the Japanese managed-pond game: small stocked still waters, 1–3 g spoons, 2–4 lb line or fine PE, almost every fish released. Single hooks are the rule there, and they need to be fine, sharp and barbless or micro-barbed. Decoy's Area Hook series is Katsuichi's range for it, each pattern aimed at a different way of fishing.

The AH-7 is the front-set specialist. In vertical fishing the spoon is dropped and lifted under the rod tip rather than wound back, the bite is read on the line, and the hook sits on the front ring instead of the tail. Katsuichi analysed the hooking mechanism for that setting and built a hook that stands up in the cup of the spoon: a slightly small up-eye holds the point upward and keeps clearance minimal, so it cannot swing round and foul the blade. To keep that position identical across the range, every size shares one gape width and only the shank length changes.

The wire is a touch thicker than the rest of the series, because vertical fishing on PE is a kake style rather than a nose style. Japanese anglers separate the two: with a nose hook (ノセ) you keep winding and let the fish load the rod onto the point; with a kake hook (掛け) you feel the bite and set it yourself. PE has no stretch, so the strike lands at full force and the hook has to take it. NS Black finish, ten per pack.

Key Features

  • Designed only for the front-hook setting used in vertical area trout fishing
  • Slightly small up-eye keeps the point upward and clearance minimal
  • Constant gape width across all sizes; only shank length changes
  • Slightly thicker wire diameter suited to PE line and a firm hook-set
  • Straight point that penetrates at the moment of the strike
  • NS Black finish, ten per pack, made in Japan by Katsuichi

Which Area Hook To Tie On

  • AH-7 "Front" — front set, vertical fishing, PE line, thicker wire. You set the hook.
  • AH-9 "Floria" — front or rear without changing hooks, Silky F Coat, the versatile alternative.
  • AH-4 "Eric" and AH-6 "Spic" — the kake and nose patterns for the retrieve: set it yourself, or let it roll-hook on the wind.
  • AH-5 "Kunai", AH-1, AH-2 — deep blind spooning, the round-bend default, the barbless spooning specialist.

How To Rig It

  • Front ring only — Fit it to the nose split ring of the spoon so the point rides up inside the cup. This is not a tail-hook pattern.
  • Vertical work — Drop the spoon to the fish, lift, and let it flutter back on a controlled line. Watch the line, not the rod tip.
  • Set on the line signal — When the line ticks or stops, sweep firmly. The thicker wire and straight point exist for that moment.
  • Size to the lure — #12 for the lightest micro spoons, #10 as the general choice, #8 for heavier blades.

Target Species By Region

  • Southeast Asia — No managed trout ponds, but vertical spoon work suits high-pressure commercial ponds and dock fishing: tilapia, small carp species, jetty fish taken straight down beside pilings. Useful wherever trebles are banned.
  • North America — Stocked rainbow, brook and brown trout in put-and-take ponds; crappie fished vertically over brush.
  • Japan & East Asia — The home fishery: area trout, specifically the vertical (tate) style on managed ponds.
  • Australia, Middle East & Europe — Stocked trout in Tasmania and Victoria; commercial trout fisheries in the UK, Germany and Italy; perch on small spoons.

Recommended Pairing

  • Ultralight area rod around 0.5–5 g with enough backbone to set a hook on PE

  • Keep the AH-9 Floria alongside if you switch between vertical and retrieve mid-session
